Foodie Friends, Ages 10-13

FOODIE FRIENDS, AGES 10-13

Foodie Friends is an 30-week cooking program for children.

Each cooking class builds skills from the one before, adding more skills as the semester progresses. Foodie Friends participants learn to cook basic meals and fun, hands-on recipes that they can replicate at home. At Foodie Friends, participants are able to work on these skills at their own pace and in a supportive environment. The instructors meet each individual where they are, making accommodations or removing supports as needed.

Foodie Friends lessons start with basic cooking skills which includes kitchen safety. Beginning lessons include knife skills, how to measure various ingredients, and stove and oven safety. As our instructors get to know the participants, the class will progress to more complex lessons that fit participants’ skill levels and interests. At Culikid, we understand that skill acquisition takes time. Our skilled instructors meet weekly to discuss the group as well as collaborate with participants and their caregivers to identify what is working well and what areas the participant might need more support in. Although each group moves at their own speed, the following are examples of some skills that are often addressed in this age group:

  • At this age children can often identify a few of their favorite foods. At Foodie Friends we want to encourage participants to reimagine their favorite foods to encourage creativity, curiosity, and flexibility. For example, a class might focus on reimagining pizza by making a pizza inspired mac and cheese dish.

  • Participants practice their knife skills and are introduced to basic skills such as slicing, dicing, chopping, etc. Depending on the participant’s skill level they may use a regular knife or Culikid cut-proof knife

  • Participants learn the rules of cooking and cleaning alongside others and take ownership of their individual roles that support the group as a whole.
