How to Make Brown Rice
Recipes like stuffed peppers, fried rice, and many others will sometimes list “cooked rice” as an ingredient. But cooking rice is a process that includes many steps in and of itself. Since you can use rice as a side or as a base for so many dishes, learning how to make it properly is a great first step for beginner cooks, especially tweens, teens, and adults with disabilities who are looking to become more independent.
Here, we break down all those steps in order to cook brown rice, a healthier option than white rice. If you’re making a different type of rice, be sure to check your package for cooking times and measurements. You can still use our steps below to help guide your process.
How to Make Brown Rice on the Stovetop
Measure 1 cup of brown rice. Put it into a strainer and rinse it under cold water.
Put the rinsed rice into a small pot.
Measure 2 cups of water and add it to the pot.
Add about 1 teaspoon of olive oil to the pot.
Add about 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Put the pot on a burner on the stove, and turn the burner to high heat.
When the water comes to a rapid boil, put a lid on the pot, and turn the heat down to medium low.
Set a timer for 45 minutes.
After 45 minutes, use a potholder to take the lid off the pot. Stir the rice and taste a small amount to make sure it is cooked.
Put the lid back on the pot and move the pot off the heat. Turn the burner off.
After 5-10 minutes, remove the lid with the potholder again and use a fork to fluff the rice.
Serve and enjoy!
Note: When making rice, be sure to check your package for measurements and cooking time. The measurements of rice and water may be different than described above. Cooking times may also be different.
